  1. Rinse the split peas in a colander and set aside.
  2. Press the SAUTE button on the Instant pot and let stand until screen reads “HOT”.
  3. Add the olive oil.
  4. Add the onion and leeks and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  5. Stir in the ground cumin, cayenne pepper, turmeric and stir to combine.
  6. Add the ham hocks and cook for 2-3 minutes.
  7. Add the split peas and stir to coat.
  8. Add 6 cups of water, lemon juice and stir to combine.
  9. Close and seal the Instant pot.
  10. Turn the venting knob to SEALING and press PRESSURE COOK button.
  11. Adjust the timer to 12 minutes.
  12. When finished cooking, quick-release pressure according to manufacturer’s directions.
  13. Transfer the ham hocks to a cutting board and let cool slightly.
  14. Pick meaty pieces off ham hocks and cut into small pieces, then stir ham back into soup.
  15. Reserve a few pieces of meat to garnish the soup if desired.
  16. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  17. Serve warm.
